Kawagoe Yokai Walk

Walking with Yokai in Little Edo Kawagoe

Walking with Yokai in Little Edo Kawagoe

The town of Kawagoe and its monsters

A yokai-themed walking tour was organized in cooperation with a local NPO to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Kawagoe City. The tour took participants around various spots in Kawagoe, mainly on Tatemonzen-dori and Taisho Roman Yume-dori, and included a stamp rally (also using an app). Yokai appeared all over the town, helping to liven up the shopping district. The Kawagoe Yokai Procession that paraded down the main street startled passersby, and the sudden appearance of something out of the ordinary created a huge reaction.

Numerous yokai legends

Kawagoe is a former battlefield and a logistics crossroads, and many legends have taken root in such places. Unexpected stories lie hidden in unexpected places that usually go unnoticed. This project focused on such things, and made use of stamp rallies and apps to create opportunities for people to become interested. You will never get bored walking around, seeing things like the Tengu at Kosai-ji Temple, the Mist-blowing Well, and the mysterious fire at Dairen-ji Temple. It was a project that allowed people to fully enjoy the charms of Kawagoe.
