The life of Shigeru Mizuki and the message "Be lazy"

Sorry for keeping you waiting for so long even though we announced the next episode!!!
Sakaiminato Travel Diary! Last timeYokai Stamp RallyBut actually,
Along this Yokai Road, there is one important attraction that you absolutely cannot miss.
"Shigeru Mizuki Memorial Museum"
P1040377

This is where Shigeru Mizuki was born.
A place where the path of my life up to the present day has been engraved
It is a sacred place equivalent to a chapel during mass.
This may seem like a religion, but for me,
It's a little like worship, so it feels right to me (laughs).
As soon as I entered, I found myself to be an eternal idol monster.
A cat girl came to greet us and greeted us.
We take photos with excitement, like elementary school students.
Ahh... I even hugged Mickey Mouse like this
I don't. How embarrassing.
Here is a picture of such an unsightly adult:

Works other than Gegege no Kitaro

Well, that was the entrance to Gegege.
If you go to the second floor, there is an exhibition of Shigeru Mizuki's works.
"Mizuki Shigeru Manga World."
Various works are on display,
You can read a representative page from each manga.
I've heard that Mizuki-sensei has been drawing a lot of things other than GeGeGe.
I knew about it, but I never imagined it would go to this extent.
I was very surprised to see that all the titles were works I had never heard of before.
In terms of categories, it's something like this.

  • War-themed works such as "All hands to the death"
  • Hero stories "Rocketman and others"
  • Political satire "Hitler and others"

Mizuki Sensei's manga
All of the expressions are straightforward, so the words are simple and easy to understand.
Therefore, even after just one page, I want to read more!
All of the works make me think that way. It's fun, too much fun.
This is the true power of manga.
It was a corner that made me feel that way.

Sleepy Life

Once you leave the manga world, you'll see a complete timeline of Shigeru Mizuki's life.
This is the "Sleepy Life" section. This is what I wanted to see.
You can learn a lot of detail about how Mizuki Sensei lived his life.
I started to look at it absentmindedly.
Already a surprise with an episode from his childhood!
Mizuki-sensei is a "Nonnonbaa (an old woman who is extremely knowledgeable about gods, Buddhas, and monsters)"
Due to the influence of an old lady in the neighborhood,
I started to become interested in death when I was about three years old.
Apparently he wanted to see where someone had died.
He actually pushed his own younger brother into the sea!?
Seriously!!! That would be quite a scandal in today's world.
In fact, attempted murder!!
Of course, my brother was safe.
Naturally, his parents gave him a severe scolding...
That's true. Pushing someone down just because you want to see them...
The world of manga! Oh, no, I was a manga artist.
From those triplets' souls,
As Mizuki Sensei entered his adolescence,
There was a most important turning point.
yes,
"war"
Ha-Go_Guam-captured
is.
Mizuki Sensei was attacked by native guerrillas while stationed in Palau.
Jump into the ocean with just a dagger and a knife
I wandered the jungle for a week.
To add insult to injury, malaria
He fought in the battle, and while he was recuperating he lost his left arm in a bombing.
(Amputation without anesthesia)
I was hovering between life and death.
I'm about to lose all will to live,
The transformation since then has been incredible.
From that moment on, I was desperate to survive.
Later, regarding the loss of his arm, Mizuki-sensei said,
"I've been able to work three times as hard as other people even though I don't have one arm. If I had both arms, I could work six times as hard as other people," he said.
In response to the question, "Have you ever felt sad about losing your left arm?"
"I've never thought that. It's more valuable to lose an arm and be alive than to lose your life."
He answered, "Yes."
The teacher has been interested in "death" since childhood.
Through his experiences of "war" in his youth, he gained real-life experience of "death" and "life."
His spirits were lifted. At this point, he was already
"Monster (Superhuman)"
I think it was written like this. *Of course, with respect.
Let's talk a bit more,
As Mizuki himself said,
I've been doing work that doesn't make you think I have one arm,
He didn't achieve financial success until he was 44 years old. Surprisingly, he was quite a late bloomer.
The person who supported this success was Nunoe-san, who is also well known from Gegege no Nyobo.
She often struggled to get along with her husband, from the extreme poverty she experienced when she first got married to her success.
I'm sure she was just that attractive, as she continued to support him.
And after his success, Mizuki sensei's work
It just keeps accelerating, until it reaches an extraordinary level.
He's in his 60s and still publishes over 50 manga a year. That's true.
demon god
Is it really just one arm?
One arm is no handicap
It's a job that makes you think.
He believes he has done three times as much as others.
It didn't seem like a lie. In fact, he seemed quite humble.

The Adventurer: Shigeru Mizuki

Now, beyond the drowsy life,
If you go a little further, you will come to a section where you can learn about Mizuki Shigeru as an adventurer.
Mizuki is in his late 60s and, despite having no arm, still goes on adventures with just a suitcase.
Dancing folk dance with local Papua New Guinea people,
A video of a spirit dancing in the fire was played, and Mizuki sensei
The picture shows her getting extremely excited.
Looking at him like this, he really is just a boy. Where does this drive come from?
This guy must be sucking power from monsters!
Old man who sucks away monsters
Well, it was in the video,
The indigenous people of Papua New Guinea
As I watched the scene where people jumped into the burning flames one after another while dancing,
This is no joke; it really makes me feel like monsters exist.
I feel like I am communicating with the Earth.
In this corner, you can see Mizuki-sensei in full swing as an adventurer.
I felt like I had touched the source of power.
I'm sure the youkai love you. (Me too, me too! lol)

Be lazy

Now, let's take a look at the highlights of the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum.
I have given you a very brief introduction to Shigeru Mizuki, but
Finally, it is the title of the article.
I want to touch on the message.
"Be lazy"
I love this phrase from Mizuki Sensei and often say it to people.
It seems that these are words, but they are the life of Shigeru Mizuki that we have introduced so far.
Don't you think there was no image of laziness whatsoever?
Actually, this is something I found out later on.
In terms of Mizuki sensei's nuances,
"Being lazy = doing only what you like"
That's what it means.
I was sure that I should live a lazy and leisurely life.
That's what I thought, but it seems I was wrong.
Mizuki's wife told him that this was a misunderstanding.
Even when they made suggestions, they apparently did not make any corrections or provide any explanation.
This is deep. Too deep.
I don't know why it's so deep
This is just something I've delved into using my imagination.
This is how I saw it.
Doing only what you like is
It's not just about "having fun".
From Mizuki's point of view, we who have both arms
If you want to, you can do six times as much.
Something that you can be passionate about six times as much as you can.
"What I like"FindBe immersed.
That's what it means.
I don't have time to do things I don't want to do.
Deep, right? (forcefully)
There is also a section on Mizuki Sensei's daily life.
There was a lot to see, including a monster exhibit.
I won't tell you everything.
Please come to Sakaiminato and see them for yourself.
This is definitely an experience that must be experienced live.
A wealth of experience that goes beyond common sense and a spirit of iron.
And yet this guy is extremely fun.
When I went to the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum, I fell in love with Shigeru Mizuki even more.
You will definitely want to experience more of that life!
I hope he continues to live a long life.
