Speaking of summer monsters...

The rainy season is about to end, but it's been a difficult season for Yuki-onna.
It's been a while, this is Chiyo.
It's been a while, but I'd like to talk about summer monsters.

Speaking of summer monsters... I've been thinking about it a lot.
I thought that if you are already browsing this site, you already know a lot of the major ones, so
I want to talk about goldfish.

You may be thinking, "Goldfish?" But when you look into goldfish, you'll find that there are many different types...

There is a monster, a ghost that is a goldfish ghost, in the novel "Baika Hyouretsu" by the Edo period comic writer Santo Kyoden.
The name comes from everyone's favorite, Shigeru Mizuki's Great Illustrated Encyclopedia of Monsters, but the original translation is "The vengeful spirit of the algae flower attaches itself to a goldfish."

The story takes place in Shinano Province (Nagano Prefecture).
Monohana was taken in as a concubine by a certain family, but the wife of that family was persuaded by a neighbor to kill the goldfish that Monohana was keeping. The goldfish in the goldfish bowl was possessed by Monohana's grudge, and Monohana avenged her grudge, and the wife was reduced to a goldfish-like appearance. According to "Baika Hyoretsu", the origin of the Ranchu goldfish is said to be when it was possessed by a grudge and turned into a strange shape.

Even so, Nagano Prefecture still gets caught up in the yokai theme a lot.
I've been going to Nagano a lot recently, but I didn't have enough private time to explore the area.
I'd like to somehow create something like this.
It may be a treasure trove of hidden monster stories...

Getting back to our original topic, who would have thought there was such a story about the Ranchu goldfish?
Goldfish are associated with summer festivals and are a familiar type of ornamental fish.
This summer, I would like to dig a little deeper and introduce it to you all again.
Well, until next time...
